I need a new garage door opener. What is better, chain, belt, screw, or direct drive?
I currently have a Genie Intellicode 550/a. When I push the button, I hear the opener making noise like it is trying to open or close. The long screw is not turning at all. Any ideas on how to save this opener? If not... What should I use? Speed is not all that important. Durability is important because I will use this opener up to 150 times a month. Thanks for all your help.
I have found that the screw drives are the most reliable - and I've installed a bunch of them.
If the screw isn't turning, remove the cover and activate the opener and see if the small black hub on the back is spinning. If it is, the small coupling is probably broken where the screw enters the motor. If it's not turning, release the drive by pulling down the catch, shut off the power or unplug the unit and try turning the motor by hand - if it's seized up, it needs replacement - if it turns freely, try it again with the drive still disconnected and see if the screw turns - if it doesn't, I would simply replace the whole unit.
