Is the upcoming THE BOOK OF DUST by PHILIP PULLMAN a novel or a collection of short stories?
The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman will be a companion novel to the His Dark Materials trilogy. It will follow Lyra, returning to her story two years after Lyra's Oxford, and will tie into that previous book. Lyra will be "about 16". The book will also be "about Dust" and will address the questions about the lack of portrayals of positive effects of religion in His Dark Materials, although it "will not be a continuation of the trilogy, but other stories about the same world and the same characters."
Pullman had conceived the idea of this book before the publication of Lyra's Oxford in 2003 but had not begun writing it at that time. In a message on his website in April 2005, he said that The Book of Dust was now "under way". As of August 2007, he was still working on the book.
The only indication of its length is Pullman's description of it as "a big, big book".
In an interview with the Oxford Mail at the premier of The Golden Compass movie, Pullman suggested The Book of Dust could be released in 2009. The same article describes the book as a 'full-length novel' which contradicts earlier claims that it would be a collection of short stories.
