I am refinishing a gun stock and I need help?
The stock is in two parts a the fore end and the shoulder stock . The for end turned out great I used remover sanded and rubbed in tung oil .But the shoulder stock seems to have two different colors to it .I did the same thing remover,sanded,and tung oil but one side looks all most white and is not taking the oil.Some one told me it may still have remover in it .How do i get it one color again? What product should I clean it with? The wood is American walnut.
The sapwood in Walnut is very light, similar to maple. If your shoulder stock does indeed have sapwood, your only option would be to use a walnut stain to get the other side to match. Look closely at the grain. If the change in color runs along the grain lines, than you can be certain that it's sapwood.
One other possibility is that the gun was on display for many years and the sun bleached one side white. This is unlikely, since the fore end doesn't have this problem, unless the fore end is a different species. Hard sanding can restore sun-bleached walnut to a darker shade.
If you end up sanding down again, start with a coarse grit and work toward fine grits. This will ensure that you remove all residue. There is little reason to use remover or stripper with such a small surface. Once you've sanded it down, wipe on a little water and hold the stock to the light to look for any remaining residue. Then "knock down" the raised grain (from the water) and rub on the tung oil.
