How to cover dark stains on wood; is there an interior solid color stain?
I have a large bow window with serious water damage at the bottom, the wood is black in certain areas (tried bleaching) and has wood filler in others (doesn't stain well). It is stained classic oak - is there a way to effectively cover it up? I don't have the $$ to replace this very expensive window. I was hoping for a solid color stain, but can't seem to find anything interior. Could you use exterior stain on an interior window? Thanks!
There is a stain that has polyurethane in it that you rub on. It is a jell that you dip out of the can, smear over the surface and rub it till it dries. Just apply a small area at a time, because the urethane base in the stain dries rather fast. I use it to repair old beat-up furniture. This way I don't have to sand or prep, just rub in the stain until I get a solid color. Sometimes it takes several coats letting it dry after each application. After I am satisfied with the stain, I protect the finish using clear varithane or urethane in a spray can. If you don't want the wood to look shiny, skip the spray finish. If you are doing furniture, you need the clear urethane/varithane finish so that the stain color won't rub off onto your clothes. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when staining and adequate ventilation if you use the stain that has urethane in it.
