How do I build a really long shelf?
I would like to build a shelf that spans my entire wall. My wall has a window in it that is approximately 8 feet wide, centered in the room. I would like to add a shelf underneath the lip of the window that spans the entire 18 foot wall. How would I do this? Is it possible to find a piece of lumber that is completely square that is that long? Would I be better off to use lumber in smaller sections, like 8 feet each or something?
I would think it would be hard to locate a piece of lumber that long and still be affordable. But, lets say you find the 18' piece of wood that you want. It may be a major problem getting that long piece of wood into your room. Even if it could come through the window is there space in the room to get it into place? Smaller sections would be better to handle and cost less. For example two pieces at 10' and cut down to 9" each would only have one joint in the center of the room. A good finish carpenter could make the joint "nearly" go away.
