I love this story! Carver writes about isolated people who have problems with communication and relationships. The narrator in the story has all these misconceptions about blind people that the blind man proves wrong--it's really the narrator that is blind. Robert, who is adept at human relationships and who has a higher level of human understanding (including spiritual, represented by the cathedral), is the kind of person the narrator aspires to be, and as the story ends on a note of hope, maybe it (human growth, development of stifled senses and sensibilities) is possible.
