How do I install a wooden fence post on a concrete substrate?
I need to install several wooden fence posts on top of a city installed cement box culvert. Whoever originally installed the posts simply set them on top and relied on the rails to support them. I need to know if there is a more durable way to re-inforce the posts. My best idea is to drill a hole through the top of the box culvert (a 3" slab) and install some rebar, then insert the rebar into pre-drilled holes in each post. If you have any suggestions...please send them my way.
I would use a post base like Simpson Strong-Tie's ABU44, which is shown in the first link below. It is anchored with a 5/8" bolt like RFB#5x5, shown in the second link, that is set with epoxy in a 3/4" hole drilled in the concrete. Both these products are available at Home Depot. For added rigidity, I would use 16' top rails, doubling and staggering them the same as the top plate in a wall frame.
